Author Interview with T.D. Thomas + Giveaway!

Hey guys! You might have seen my review of Hera, Queen of Gods a few days ago here on the blog. It's a great Greek mythology incorporation, and I think everyone should check it out. Anyway, today I have the author of the book, T.D. Thomas, here to answer some questions. And I'm also hosting an ebook giveaway of Hera, Queen of Gods!

Interview with T.D. Thomas

Me: Describe Hera, Queen of Gods in three words.

T.D: Action-packed. Exciting. Dramatic.

Me: What inspired you to write about Greek mythology?

T.D: I think Greek mythology is such a deep well to draw from: it has all the human conflict you could want, plus really cool monsters, super-powered heroes, and a panoply of temperamental gods. What more could an author ask for?

Me: I agree completely! What made you decide to write from Hera's perspective?

T.D: I've always felt that Hera had a story to tell, one that hadn't really been told yet, at least not in the way I'd tell it. She's so often villainized in pop culture, and I thought, "What if there's more to it than that? What would she say in her defence?"

Me: How much research went into this book?

T.D: It's difficult to measure. A lot of the book came from my endless reading of mythology as a child, but I also had to look up a few details here and there to refresh my memory. Thank God for the Internet!

Me: Any idea on how many books you're planning for this series?

T.D: At least three. I'm flirting with a fourth.

Me: That's great, I can't wait for the next book! How easy/difficult was it to get your book published?

T.D: Self-publishing has been very costly and time-consuming. Paying for editing, covers, and the website added up to quite a lot. It's really only a route to take if you have a story you desperately believe in and one you're also willing to invest in.

Me: Do you have any advice for aspiring authors?

T.D: Not everyone is going to like your work. There. I said it. In the great, wide world, there are an infinite variety of tastes, and at the end of the day, you can't please them all. Once you accept that, you become much happier. More importantly, you realize that you must ultimately tell the story for yourself and not for anyone else. You can compromise something in your work to please one person, only to irritate someone else. The safest option, in my opinion, is to tell your story however you want to tell it, and let the chips fall where they may.

Me: That's some great advice! And now for a few random questions -

What is your favourite thing to do when on vacation?

T.D: Lie on a beach. I'm notoriously lazy when I get the chance, and I love the luxurious feeling of the hot sun beating down on me. It's a far cry from what we get to do in Canada most of the year.

Me: I can imagine! What music do you like listening to?

T.D: Right now, I'm listening to a lot of French pop from Quebec to try to improve my second language skills. They often fuse a contemporary pop song (like "Kiss You Inside Out by Hedley") with a French translation of the same song, so you wind up with a bilingual song, partly in English and partly in French. I really like that. It's a nice twist on the all-too-often repetitive Top 40.

Me: Oooh, that sounds interesting. I love Hedley! As a child, did you like reading? If so, what were your favourite books?

T.D: I read voraciously as a child. I loved fantasy, and still do. David Eddings, in junior high, and Anne Bishop in high school. Their stories will forever be etched on my soul.

Awesome! Thank you so much, T.D., for taking the time out to answer my questions!
